Stonecarving Courses

As a trained and experienced teacher Glenn is now offering Stonecarving Courses both in conjunction with ‘Arts in the Marches’and from his studio near Hay on Wye.

Beginners Courses (2 days)

Beginners courses are run through ‘Arts in the Marches’ near Ross on Wye, and cover the basics of ‘first encounters’ with stone.
Courses include all tools and safety equipment as well as lunch in a relaxed setting.

Available courses:

Introduction to Stone – Relief Carving

Areas covered: Sourcing stone, planning work, tools, types of stone, safety equipment,basic techniques and a look at other sculptors work.
During this course students will carve a relief of their own design in limestone.

Direct Carving

This course follows on from Introduction to Stone (unless students have previous experience)
Areas covered: Concepts of direct carving, developing student’s ideas, finishing and mounting.
During this course students will work in Alabaster, a soft, easily carved stone that allows a ‘free’ approach. The final form will be polished and mounted.

Carving in the Round

Areas covered: Maquettes, planning work and ‘scaling up’, suitability of idea in relation to material, advanced use of tools.
In this course students will create a sculpture using a design of their own choosing (in consultation with tutor) using traditional carving techniques.

Bespoke and Intermediate/Advanced Courses in Stonecarving

These courses are run from Glenn’s studio set in the beautiful hills near Hay on Wye. They can be arranged by appointment and are designed to give the student, with either no or some previous experience of working in stone, the chance to advance their skills in a fully equipped studio. Courses are limited to 3 or 4 students to allow for maximum attention and tuition time.

A delicious lunch is provided, as well as great cakes, and we can help you find somewhere to stay nearby – there are plenty of great B&Bs or pubs or even campsites.

Students are able to work in a variety of stones including marble, limestone, springstone, serpentine and alabaster.

All equipment including power tools, safety and lifting gear is provided. Please contact Glenn for details and to discuss requirements. (Note: please allow time for us to source stone for certain specific projects)
